Sheriff’s Department officials said Wednesday they have no new clues on the whereabouts of four prisoners who escaped from the Orange County Jail in Santa Ana on Sunday night.

Lt. Robert Rivas said searchers were still working throughout the Southland and will continue through the holiday.

Rivas also said there has been no sign of a car that three of the inmates are believed to have stolen shortly after their escape. Police are still searching for a 1986 reddish-orange Ford Escort with South Dakota license plates, 49R298.

The four inmates escaped by cutting through a reinforced chain-link fence in a rooftop recreation area. They then rappelled down the four-story building with a makeshift rope of braided bed sheets.

A fifth inmate suffered a broken leg when he fell during the climb down from the roof. He was returned to custody.
