A sewage spill Thursday contaminated De Anza Cove in Mission Bay, according to a county health department spokesman.

The spill was caused by an overflow from a manhole at Mission Bay Drive and Rosewood Street, Larry Bodenhamer said, adding that the sewage flowed into a storm drain, then into De Anza Cove.

Bodenhamer said that city crews received a call at 1:29 p.m. and that by the time they were on the scene at 2:29, the overflow had cleared itself, meaning the flow rate and amount of sewage are unknown.

The cove has been posted against recreational use until further notice.
