SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: DIVISION VI : Defense Takes Sea Kings to New Heights

Dave Holland, Corona del Mar High School football coach, expected a good performance from his defense going into Friday night’s Southern Section Division VI playoff game with Anaheim.

He got one as the the Sea Kings limiting the Colonists to 111 yards en route to a 28-8 victory at Glover Stadium.

Corona del Mar (10-0-2), the Sea View League champion, will play Pacifica next week in the semifinals. It will be the first time Corona del Mar has gone that far in the playoffs.

Quarterback Ty Price led the Sea Kings, completing 15 of 20 passes for 169 yards. He also ran 62 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to make the score 14-0.

“Our defense played extremely well and gave our offense a chance to do something,” Holland said. “We were able to throw the ball early, and that set up the run.”

Corona del Mar took a 7-0 halftime lead on a 1-yard run by John Katovsich that capped a 10-play, 53-yard drive. The Sea Kings made it 21-0 midway through the fourth quarter on a 19-yard run by Brian Lucas, ending an 8-play, 76-yard drive with 7:48 to play.

Anaheim (7-5) was limited to just one first down in the first half. The Colonists scored on a 4-yard run by Anthony Perez, a touchdown set up when Anaheim’s Sam Quintero recovered a bad center snap on a Corona del Mar punt attempt at the Sea King 33-yard-line. Four plays later, Perez scored, the first points Corona del Mar has allowed in 4 games.

Corona del Mar defensive back Warren Johnson returned an interception 12 yards for a touchdown with 30 seconds left to play for the Sea Kings’ final score. Johnson also had an interception in the second quarter.

John Mountain, the Colonists’ leading rusher, was held to 63 yards in 10 carries.
