A man was fatally shot and a woman critically wounded in their north Anaheim home Monday night, and police arrested a suspect in the neighborhood.

Police late Monday night had not specified what had happened in the house at 328 N. Sweetwater St. A team of police detectives, cadets and Explorers were searching the neighborhood and nearby bike trail along the Santa Ana River for clues to explain the motive for the attack.

Police confirmed the arrest of at least one suspect in connection with the shooting which occurred at about 8:10 p.m.

An officer at the scene said investigators indicated that articles may have been taken from the house, raising the possibility of robbery.

Reported in Critical Condition

Neighbors identified the couple as Owen L. Terry and his wife, Pauline, a teacher’s aide at nearby Riverdale Elementary School.

A nursing supervisor at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana said the woman had sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and was in critical condition.

A neighbor, Elvia Lopez, who has lived in the middle-class neighborhood east of Kaiser Hospital for 17 years, said the Terrys had lived there since the mid-1970s.

Doris Hartley, another neighbor, said the victims lived in a two-story stucco house on the corner of Sweetwater and Riverdale Avenue. She added that the couple appeared to be in their 50s.

Another neighbor said that shortly after 8 p.m., she heard “a lot of sirens. Then all of a sudden, the street was full of police and fire trucks, and there was a helicopter overhead with a search light.”

Police quickly sealed off the house and the intersection of Sweetwater and Riverdale, she added.

Other neighbors gave conflicting reports on the victim’s vocation. One identified him as a physician and another said he was a former antique store owner. But voter registration records list him as a financial manager.
