Keys Suffers Disk Injury, Out for Season

Charger defensive end Tyrone Keys was sidelined for the season Wednesday because of a herniated disk.

Keys, a sixth-year pro from Mississippi State, suffered the injury in last Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Al Saunders said Keys would be put through a “conservative rehabilitation program” in the hope of avoiding surgery.

Keys would have started against the Bengals in Cincinnati Sunday. Leslie O’Neal plays only sparingly on artificial turf because of the 1986 knee injury from which he only recently recovered. In Keys’ absence, a backup defensive tackle, Les Miller or Karl Wilson, probably will be moved to end.

The Chargers waived safety Marvin Mattox off injured reserve. Mattox, a free agent from Kansas, had been out all season with a shoulder injury.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern California College jumped to a 14-2 lead and went on to a 93-78 victory over Christian Heritage in a nonleague game at Costa Mesa.

Will Cunningham scored 27 points and Mark Kraatz added 13 for Christian Heritage (4-1). Kyle Lundy had 22 points to lead SCC (4-0).

Darryl Martin came off the bench to score 15 points and grab 14 rebounds as San Diego-based Athletes In Action rallied to a 90-81 victory over Victoria, B.C.

Victoria led by 17 points in the first half. Rod Foster had 25 points and Lorenzo Romar and Zack Jones added 21 apiece for AIA (8-19).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Seventh-seeded Cathie Anderson of Rancho Santa Fe was upset by unseeded Stephanie Hagan of Denver, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the National Hardcourt Women’s 40 Senior Tennis Tournament at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Top-seeded Dee Williams-Horne of Pasadena defeated Wende Cooper of Santa Rosa, 6-2, 6-4, and second-seeded Barbara Mueller of Rancho Mirage defeated Nancy Beaty of Rancho Santa Fe, 6-0, 6-1.

The tournament continues at 9 a.m. today.

MEN’S TENNIS

The eight seeded players advanced to the third round of the San Diego All-College tournament at the University of San Diego.

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega, seeded No. 1, defeated Gary Breen of San Diego City College, 6-1, retired, and second-seeded David Stewart of USD advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Randall Mark of UCSD. Third-round matches begin at 1 p.m. today.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Millie Stanley of Escondido advanced to the second round of match play in the California Women’s Amateur at Carmel Valley Golf and Country Club.

Stanley, 69 and the state senior champion, defeated Kelly Crawford of Rancho Cordova, 1-up.
