Tour of South Africa Left TAC With Little Choice
By suspending indefinitely the first group of a total of 16 U.S. participants in the lucrative South African track and field tour (Nov. 19), The Athletics Congress invoked its only plausible response.
These athletes and coaches have thumbed their noses at the victims of apartheid while crying about the financial inequities of the sport in the United States. Track, with its often Spartan standard of living, is their sport of choice.
By going for the money, and in effect lending credibility to the racist policies of South Africa, they must not be allowed to further deteriorate confidence in the motives of the United States as they pertain to this volatile issue.
