USIU Wins Consolation at Ball State

Demetrius Laffitte scored 19 points and added 13 rebounds as United States International defeated Tennessee State, 94-85, in the consolation game of the Ball State tournament.

Laffitte, who was named to the all-tournament team, was 8 of 12 from the field and 3 of 4 from the line for the Gulls (3-2). Gary Williams led all scorers with 25 points, and Paul Wilson added 18 for USIU.

The Gulls, which led, 46-38, at the half, outrebounded Tennessee State, 49-27. USIU has not been out-rebounded in its 5 games. Robert Neely scored 22 points for Tennessee State (1-3).

USIU continues its 10-game trip at California on Monday.

Christian Heritage avenged its only defeat this season with an 84-69 victory over Southern California College at Granite Hills High.

SCC (5-1) defeated Christian Heritage, 93-78, Wednesday night, but this time Christian Heritage controlled the boards (40-20 rebound advantage) and shut down SCC’s running game.

Will Cunningham made 7 of 9 shots and scored 21 points, and Mark Kraatz added 17 for Christian Heritage (5-1). The victory snapped a 6-game losing streak to SCC.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State rallied from a 32-30 halftime deficit to defeat Tennessee Tech, 78-56, in the finals of the San Diego State tournament.

Chana Perry, the tournament MVP, led SDSU (5-0) with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Julie Evans added 20 points for the Aztecs. Melinda Clayton led Tennessee Tech (3-1) with 12 points.

Monmouth College defeated Baylor, 71-65, behind 20 points from Tracey Robinson.

TENNIS

Bonsall’s Sally Huss advanced to the women’s singles finals of the National Hardcourt Women’s 40s Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Huss, seeded eighth, ousted No. 4 Judy Louie of Corona del Mar, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to today’s final.

In the third round of the father-son division, three La Jolla teams were eliminated. In women’s doubles, Kathy Willette of San Diego and Cathie Anderson of Rancho Santa Fe were defeated, 6-2, 6-4, in a semifinal, and in mixed doubles, Butch and Brenda Stillman of Encinitas lost, 6-3, 6-0.

Jose Luis Noriega and Mark Farren of the University of San Diego advanced to the finals of the San Diego County All-College tournament at USD. Noriega defeated Joe McDonough of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-0, and Farren defeated teammate J.R. Edwards, 7-5, 6-1.

The final is at 11 a.m. today, with the doubles following.

FOOTBALL

He was supposed to get married Saturday, but former Sweetwater High and University of Utah fullback Martel Black landed in jail after failing a drug test in Salt Lake City.

Already facing a minimum 5-year prison term on federal drug charges, the latest violation could increase the sentence the Black is due to receive Jan. 3.

U.S. District Judge David K. Winder Wednesday granted permission for the former Ute star to leave a halfway house Friday afternoon through Sunday to get married and have a short honeymoon.

But after being told of the results of a Nov. 16 urinalysis, Winder ordered Black transferred from the halfway house to the jail.

Black had pleaded guilty Oct. 18 to selling cocaine to someone under 21 and possessing cocaine with intent to sell it.
