The State : Armory Open for Homeless

Share

The California National Guard Armory in San Jose was opened to house some of Santa Clara County’s homeless for the first chilly night of the winter. James McEntee, the county’s director of human relations, announced that overnight temperatures were expected to dip below 40 degrees, automatically triggering the opening of the state’s largest armory as a 220-cot temporary housing facility. McEntee said he hopes to keep the building open through Friday, a change in policy on the part of the state Office of Emergency Services, which last year required that the facility be open on a night-by-night basis only. Armories in Sunnyvale and Gilroy, which each can house up to 80 people, will be opened within the next 10 days, McEntee added.
