College Basketball Roundup : Mourning Betters Ewing With 11 Blocks

It took freshman Alonzo Mourning all of 3 games to break one of Patrick Ewing’s records at Georgetown.

Mourning, who almost made the U.S. Olympic team that played in Seoul, had a school-record 11 blocked shots Wednesday night as the No. 4-ranked Hoyas defeated St. Leo, 95-62, at Landover, Md.

“He’s amazing. A heckuva player,” said Georgetown guard Charles Smith, who scored 13 points and set a school record of his own with 16 assists. “He’s so good, he may break his own record in the next game.”

Mourning had 11 points and 10 rebounds despite being removed with 13:41 left in the game. He blocked his 11th shot early in second half, breaking the record set by Ewing in February 1985.

The Hoyas are 3-0 and have won by average of 36 points, but they have yet to play a Division I school. St. Leo’s record is 2-4.

Northwestern Louisiana 85, Kentucky 82--Terrence Rayford scored 6 of the Demons’ final 10 points in the upset at Lexington, Ky., overshadowing a stellar performance by Kentucky’s LeRon Ellis.

Ellis, the center from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, made 14 of 17 shots to finish with a career-high 37 points. He also had 10 rebounds.

Rayford, who had with 21 points and 11 rebounds, gave Northwestern Louisiana the lead for good, 82-80, on an inside basket with 42 seconds to play. The Demons, ending a 3-game losing streak to improve to 3-3, overcame a 41-36 halftime deficit by hitting 20 of 29 shots (69%) in the final 20 minutes.

Northwestern, which started a 4-guard lineup with no player taller than 6 feet 7 inches, also held a 32-31 edge in rebounding, including 19-9 in the second half.

Kentucky lost for the second straight time and fell to 2-4.

North Carolina 89, Vanderbilt 77--North Carolina scored the first 15 points of the game as the eighth-ranked Tar Heels won at Chapel Hill, N.C., behind 25 points from Jeff Lebo and 20 from Kevin Madden.

Lebo scored 19 of his points in the first half, making 4 three-pointers in the first 9 minutes. The Tar Heels (7-1) led by as much as 23 points in the first half before Vanderbilt (2-4) closed to 46-39 at halftime.

Michigan 108, Central Michigan 62--Six Wolverines scored in double figures, led by Glen Rice’s 21 points, as second-ranked Michigan won handily at Ann Arbor, Mich..

Terry Mills added 19 points for Michigan (7-0). Loy Vaught scored 16, Sean Higgins 13, Kirk Taylor 11 and Rumeal Robinson 10.

“I thought Michigan tried to be very, very lenient with us,” Central Michigan Coach Charlie Coles said. “They probably could have scored 200 points if they wanted to. Tonight was just a nightmare.”

The Chippewas (3-2) were led by Jeff Majerle’s 17 points and Carson Butler, whose 16 points included 4 three-pointers.

Missouri 73, Tulsa 61--The 11th-ranked Tigers got 23 points from Byron Irvin, including 15 in the second half, to win at Tulsa, Okla.

Missouri is 6-2; Tulsa 1-3.
