SportsScope : Undefeated Bruin Women Spikers Face BYU Friday in NCAA West Tournament

The top-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team (32-0) will meet No. 12 Brigham Young at 6 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the NCAA West Regional at Pauley Pavilion. In Friday’s second game, No. 2 Stanford will face No. 9 Washington at 8. The championship game is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Winners from four regionals will advance to the NCAA finals on Dec. 15 and 17 at the University of Minnesota.

The Bruins are led by Daiva Tomkus, Elaine Youngs and Samantha Shaver. Tomkus was named the Pacific 10 Conference player of the year. In the Bruins’ three-game victory over California in the first round of the NCAA playoffs, Youngs had 14 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs, and Shaver had 13 kills, 12 digs and 2 blocks.

The UCLA women’s basketball team (2-2) will play at Cal State Fullerton (3-1 as the week began) at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Last week the Bruins defeated Loyola Marymount, 61-42, and Northern Arizona, 80-46. UCLA is paced by freshman center Molly Tideback, who is averaging 14.3 points and 4.3 rebounds; junior forward Michele Wootton (10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds) and junior forward Sandra Van Embricqs (8 points, 7 rebounds).

The Santa Monica College men’s basketball team (9-1) will play host to Los Angeles City College in its home opener at 7 p.m. Friday at Corsair Gymnasium.

Last week the Corsairs lost their first game of the season, falling to Golden West, 80-79, in the final of the Antelope Valley College tournament. Five Corsairs scored in double figures: Von Shuler, 14 points; Kemo Patrick, 13; Mark Day, 12 (and 15 rebounds), and Mark Moton and DeShawn Pullard, 11 each. Pullard added 9 assists and Moton 10 rebounds.

Guards Pullard and Troy Batiste were named to the all-tournament team.

The Santa Monica College women’s basketball team (5-2 at the start of the week) will entertain Palomar at 5 p.m. Friday at Corsair Gymnasium.

Last week the Corsairs won three road games. They routed Compton, 84-29, and San Diego Mesa, 63-32, and defeated San Diego City, 61-51. In the three games, SMC sophomore forward LaVern Moore scored 81 points and had 51 rebounds.

St. Bernard High School is seeded first among the boys teams and Culver City is the top-seeded girls team in the Beverly Hills High School basketball tournament, which will be played Dec. 12-17 at the school.

St. Bernard will meet the Culver City boys at 4:30 p.m. Monday and the Culver City girls will play Notre Dame Academy at 3 p.m. Monday.

Other boys teams in the field are Rolling Hills, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Westlake, Buena, Glendale, Crespi, Notre Dame Sherman Oaks, Simi Valley Royal, Palisades, Oxnard Rio Mesa, Saugus, Redondo and Beverly Hills.

In the girls section, other teams are Marymount, North Torrance, Palisades, El Segundo, Estancia and Beverly Hills.

The girls championship game is at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 16 and the boys final at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 17.

For the second year in a row, the Santa Monica College women’s volleyball team finished in fifth place in the state tournament at San Jose City College.

The Corsairs, who won their second straight Western State Conference championship, advanced to the state finals after defeating Citrus in five games in a regional championship. SMC’s Amy Prout was named the outstanding player of the match and to the all-regional team.

At San Jose, the Corsairs defeated DeAnza in four games but lost to Golden West, the eventual state champion, in three and to Cerritos in three close games.

The UCLA women’s swim team (4-0) will compete today through Sunday in the Cal State Long Beach Winter Invitational.

Last week the Bruins defeated Long Beach, 90-47. UCLA freshman Kris Stoudt won the 50-meter freestyle in 25.07 and the 100 butterfly in 58.49, and sophomore Sheri Smith won the 200 butterfly in 2:05.21.

Girls age 8 to 15 and boys 6 to 16 may register for basketball leagues that begin in January at the Beverly Hills Family YMCA, 9930 Santa Monica Blvd. There is a need for coaches and officials. Call (213) 553-0731.
