Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Student Newspaper, Staff Win 12 Awards

The Orange Coast College student newspaper, Coast Report, and its staff received 12 awards in the 31st annual Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges Southern Section competition recently in Whittier. More than 450 students from 33 schools in Southern California and Arizona participated.

In the on-the-spot category, Ken Linton of Costa Mesa placed third in feature writing and Mark McGregor of Fountain Valley placed fifth in news photography.

In the mail-in category, the Coast Report placed second for best use of photos, fourth for general excellence, fifth for editorial writing and sixth for front-page layout.

Katsuya Rainone finished third in the best sports photos competition, and Julie Stearns of Laguna Beach placed fourth in news photography. Fifth-place awards went to Martin Egan of Newport Beach for best news story and to Kris Tronvold of Costa Mesa for editorial cartooning.

Honorable mentions went to Catie Jackson of Costa Mesa for on-the-spot newswriting and to Aaron Creighton for editorial cartooning.
