Local News in Brief : Students to Raise Funds for Armenia

Share

Students and staff at Los Angeles city schools who have raised several hundred thousand dollars in recent years for disaster victims in Mexico City and Ethiopia will be doing the same for victims of last week’s earthquake in Soviet Armenia.

School board members indicated their support Monday for a districtwide relief effort, which will be presented for formal approval next week.

Similar campaigns--including classroom collections, food sales, dances and talent shows--in 1985 raised $366,000 for earthquake victims in Mexico City and $460,000 for famine victims in Ethiopia.

The earthquake last week has prompted relief efforts by many local organizations, including the Armenian General Benevolent Union at 589 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, 90004. The group has also established a telephone hot line, 800-282-9877.
