Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders added the Maxwell Award to the Heisman Trophy he had earned earlier, and used the opportunity to deny rumors that he would skip his senior year to play in the National Football League.
“I’ll be at Oklahoma State next year,” Sanders said.
Sanders easily won the Maxwell with 400 of 629 first-place votes and a total point count of 2,392. Runner-up Rodney Peete, the USC quarterback, had 105 first-place votes and a total of 1,288. UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman, 56 and 868; Miami quarterback Steve Walsh, 36 and 473, and West Virginia quarterback Major Harris, 32 and 383, were the next three candidates.
