An Alhambra man was shot and killed as he tried to break up a fight outside a Glassell Park supermarket, police said.

Richard Melendrez, 36, was standing with three other men in the market’s parking lot at 2105 Cypress Ave. when the fight erupted at 2 a.m., Detective Dean Parsons said. “It was some sort of dispute, and the victim apparently interjected himself into it,” Parsons said.

One of the men in the group shot Melendrez with a handgun, Parsons said. Police said they did not know what the fight was about or if Melendrez knew the other men in the group. The men, who are still at large, fled the parking lot before police arrived, and Melendrez was pronounced dead at the scene, Parsons said.
