The body of a woman wearing blue jeans and a light green tank top with the words “Sportsman’s Pub” on it was found in a Scripps Miramar Ranch canyon early Wednesday.

Police said they doubt that the death is connected to the 38 serial slayings of women in San Diego County over the past three years.

“The task force came and left,” said Deputy Coroner Joseph Cogen, who was called to the scene when the body was found at 9:45 a.m. by two local residents taking a walk. “They didn’t show any interest.”

The Metropolitan Homicide Task Force, composed of San Diego Police and Sheriff’s Department detectives, was formed about six months ago after the nude bodies of many women--mainly prostitutes and transients--were found strangled in remote areas in San Diego County.

Cogen said the woman was 25 to 35, about 5-foot-6, weighing 125 pounds and had shoulder-length, reddish-brown hair. She was found at the bottom of a 30-foot canyon in the 10900 block of Spring Canyon Road. Cogen said blood on her body could have come from the fall.

She suffered no apparent knife or gunshot wounds, he said, and there were no apparent bruises on her neck from strangulation.

Another deputy coroner said she had been dead “a short period of time.” The exact length of time and cause of death will be determined after an autopsy is performed.

A police spokesman said the task force may again become involved after more information on the death is gathered.
