Share

Twenty-seven anglers caught about a ton of fish at San Nicholas Island while searching for rock cod and sheepshead in the third annual Fish for the Homeless aboard the Deluxe from 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro.

Trip organizer Tony Salas said the L.A. Union Rescue Mission will serve the fish.

The anglers donated the fish and tackle companies donated prizes to the fishermen.

The jackpot was won by Robert Holbrow of West Los Angeles with a 13-pound sheepshead. He was awarded a custom rod.

With some anglers competing in teams for large fish and bag weights, first prize went to Larry Lopez of West Los Angeles, who won rock cod rigs. The second-team award went to Ignacio Heredia of Santa Monica who won free fishing trips.

A second trip is scheduled at 9 p.m. Saturday, with all fish again being donated to the mission. For information and reservations, call 543-5088.

Fred Schauer of West Los Angeles, fishing Santa Monica Bay aboard the Solito with 12-pound line in 70 feet of water, caught a 39 1/4-pound halibut. It took him 33 minutes to land the big flattie.

Records continue to be broken. Just two weeks ago the largest sand bass caught on the Annie B barge was 8 1/2. A new sand bass record for the barge was set Sunday when Raymond Daforno landed a 9-pounder. The San Pedro angler was using cut bait with a halibut rig.

South Bay Catches

Tom Wilkens of West Los Angeles, fishing at Catalina Island with live squid aboard the Topgun, brought to gaff a 24 1/2-pound yellowtail that awarded him the whopper of the week.

Charles Otquistace of West Los Angeles, aboard the Ellie M, won the jackpot with a 24-pound ling cod.
