College Basketball Roundup : Notre Dame’s Luck Runs Out, Valparaiso Wins in Overtime

Valparaiso University stunned No. 19 Notre Dame, 71-68, in overtime as Scott Anselm scored 21 points and made 2 foul shots with 16 seconds left to seal the upset Saturday night at Valparaiso, Ind.

Mike Jones’ layup at the buzzer lifted Valparaiso into a 64-64 tie at the end of regulation play.

Notre Dame (4-1) led, 55-46, with 8:46 remaining and was ahead, 64-59, with 31 seconds left before twice missing the front end of one-and-one foul shots, allowing the Crusaders to rally.

Valparaiso (3-6) fell behind, 68-64, with 3:17 remaining in overtime before holding the Irish scoreless the rest of the way. Scott Blum hit a 3-pointer to make it 68-67 with 2:44 left, and Jim Ford’s dunk with 44 seconds to go put Valparaiso ahead.

Anselm’s 2 foul shots gave the Crusaders a 3-point lead, and Notre Dame missed 3 3-point attempts at the end. Mike Jones finished with 19 points and Ford 13. Valparaiso made 10 3-point shots, including 4 by Ford and 3 by Anselm.

“I am very proud of this team,” Valparaiso Coach Hower Drew said. “Miracles do happen.”

Joe Fredrick scored 20 points for Notre Dame.

Georgetown 74, DePaul 64--Charles Smith scored 37 points, including his team’s final 16, to lead the No. 5 Hoyas (6-0) past the Blue Demons (5-4) at Landover, Md.

Smith hit a running one-hander in the lane and then made a breakaway layup to make it 66-58. After a DePaul basket, Smith hit a short jumper with 67 seconds remaining and sealed the victory by making 4 free throws and a layup in the final 31 seconds.

Georgetown freshman Alonzo Mourning scored 19 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and blocked 8 shots.

Washington 89, Memphis State 88--Reserve center Todd Lautenbach converted 3 free throws in the final 42 seconds, including 2 with 6 seconds remaining, to give the Huskies (3-2) a victory over the Tigers (3-4) at Seattle.

Lautenbach drew Washington within 88-87 by hitting 1 of 2 free throws.

The Huskies rebounded Lautenbach’s missed second free throw and ran the clock down until Lautenbach was fouled while going for an offensive rebound.

Lautenbach, who had open-heart surgery 2 years ago, was taken to a hospital with an accelerated heartbeat during the Huskies’ previous game, a 79-75 victory over DePaul Dec. 6.

He said he felt fine this time, but his heart was racing while he stood at the free-throw line. “I was under a lot of stress, but with my new medication, I don’t think there will be any more problems.”

Mark West scored 25 points and Eldridge Recasner had 24 for the Huskies.

Memphis State’s Elliot Perry scored 28 points, 22 in the first half, when he made all 9 of his shots.

Arizona State 77, San Diego State 72--Trent Edwards scored 19 points as the Sun Devils (5-1) beat the Aztecs (3-2) at Tempe, Ariz. Arizona State used a 14-4 second-half spree to pull away.

UC Santa Barbara 64, Santa Clara 57--Eric McArthur had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots to lead the Gauchos (6-0) over the Broncos (5-2) at Santa Barbara. Jens Gordon scored 27 points for Santa Clara. Mike Doyle and Carrick DeHart each had 12 for UCSB.

Indiana 81, Texas El Paso 63--Eric Anderson scored 11 of his 23 points from the free-throw line, where the Hoosiers (7-4) got 34 points in their victory over the previously unbeaten Miners (7-1) at Bloomington, Ind.

Greg Foster, eligible for the first time since transferring from UCLA, made his debut for Texas El Paso and scored 9 points. The only Miner in double figures was Tim Hardaway, who scored 30 points.

Ohio State 104, Dayton 76--Jay Burson scored 24 points and Perry Carter had 23 as the No. 14 Buckeyes (6-1) defeated the Flyers (3-3) at Dayton, Ohio.

The Flyers beat Ohio State the past two seasons, 89-86 and 81-80.

Purdue 95, Utah 53--Melvin McCants and Steven Scheffler each scored 18 points, and the Utes were held to just 2 points during a 9-minute span as the Boilermakers (5-3) won at West Lafayette, Ind.

Michigan State 70, Austin Peay 60--The Spartans improved to 6-0 as Steve Smith scored 17 points to pace the victory over the Governors (5-3) at East Lansing, Mich.

Illinois 105, Tennessee Tech 77--Lowell Hamilton scored 18 points to lead the No. 6 Illini (7-0) past the Golden Eagles at Champaign, Ill.

Minnesota 83, Marquette 67--Kevin Lynch scored 26 points and sparked a 22-4 first-half run as the Gophers (4-2) downed the Warriors (3-4) at Milwaukee.

Syracuse 95, Canisius 69--Sherman Douglas scored 23 points as the No. 3 Orangemen (10-0) routed the Golden Griffins (1-3) at Syracuse, N.Y. For Canisius, from Buffalo, it was its 13th straight loss to its intrastate rival.

Georgia 80, Georgia Tech 69--Alec Kessler scored 23 points as the Bulldogs (5-2) overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to turn back the 11th-ranked Yellow Jackets (4-1) at Atlanta.

The Bulldogs’ comeback was led by freshmen Elmore Spencer and Litterial Green, who each finished with 13 points. Green also held Georgia Tech’s high-scoring Dennis Scott to 9 points.

Georgia Tech’s Brian Oliver scored 28 points, including his team’s last 14 points.

Florida State 78, Penn State 71--Tony Dawson scored 29 points and George McCloud had 21 as the No. 12 Seminoles (6-0) struggled past the Nittany Lions (3-2) at University Park, Pa.

The Seminoles, playing on the road for the first time this season, never led by more than 11 points.

Florida State, averaging 103 points per game, had scored at least 87 in its first 5 games.

Villanova 70, Temple 59--Kenny Wilson scored 25 points and Doug West added 24 as the Wildcats (6-3) beat the Owls (2-4) at Villanova, Pa.

Mark Macon scored 15 points for Temple.

Villanova, aided by a double-technical against Temple Coach John Chaney, built a 60-49 lead with 2:15 left.

Arkansas State 80, Bowling Green 51--John Tate scored 20 points and Greg Williams added 18 as the Indians (7-1) beat the Falcons (5-3) in the championship game of the Kentucky Invitational Tournament at Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky 91, Marshall 78--LeRon Ellis scored 33 points and Chris Mills had 17 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (4-5) past the Thundering Herd (2-3) in the consolation game of the Kentucky Invitational.

Louisville 92, Oklahoma State 90--LaBradford Smith scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half, and the No. 15 Cardinals (5-2) held held off the Cowboys (4-2) at Louisville, Ky.

South Carolina 83, Tennessee 81--The Gamecocks (5-0) came from 13 points down in the final 7 minutes to force overtime at Knoxville, Tenn., and beat the No. 16 Volunteers (4-1) on Barry Manning’s 3 free throws in the final 30 seconds of the extra period.

South Carolina’s Terry Dozier hit a 3-point shot to tie the score, 72-72, at the end of regulation.

Missouri 113, Ohio U. 85--Doug Smith scored 31 points, and the No. 10 Tigers (9-2) came back from a 9-point deficit in the first half to win its own tournament at Columbia, Mo. Paul Graham scored 26 points and Dave Jamerson 23 for the Bobcats (3-4).
