NBA Roundup : Parish Gets 34 as Celtics Beat Knicks

Share

Robert Parish had 34 points and 15 rebounds Sunday night to lead the revived Celtics to a 117-104 victory over the New York Knicks, who have 14 straight losses in Boston Garden.

The much-improved Knicks had won 6 straight and led the third-place Celtics by 5 games in the Atlantic Division. With Larry Bird out, they had hoped they could win at Boston for the first time since 1984.

But the Celtics seemed to get a tremendous lift the other night when they beat the Lakers and it carried over to this game.

With Parish, 35, leading the way, the Celtics led most of the game. They had only an 84-83 lead early in the final quarter. But when the Knicks thought they would pull it out, youngsters Reggie Lewis and Brian Shaw, teamed with Parish on a 13-0 run to wipe out the Knicks.

Patrick Ewing, making 14 of 19 shots from the field, led the Knicks with 30 points, but in 42 minutes he had only 6 rebounds. The Celtics dominated the rebounding, 48-36.

The Celtics, who hope to have Bird back in early March, are 12-11, and have won 3 straight.

Parish also had 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks in his finest performance of the season.

Houston 120, San Antonio 109--Akeem Olajuwon scored 14 of his 35 points in the pivotal fourth quarter at Houston and had 17 rebounds and blocked 8 shots.

It was the seventh straight loss for the Spurs, who trailed only, 93-90, halfway through the final quarter. But Olajuwon scored 7 points in a 9-5 burst that put Houston (14-9) ahead by 7.

Greg Anderson sparked the Spurs, who are only 1-9 on the road this season, with 29 points and 10 rebounds.
