The rotten carcass of a 26-foot gray whale found off Windansea Beach was taken to Miramar landfill Tuesday to be buried, a spokeswoman for the National Marine Fisheries Service said.
Fishery biologist Aleta Hohn said it was impossible to determine the cause of death because the whale had begun to decompose.
The whale was found Monday just before noon by lifeguards, who had it towed to Fiesta Island to avoid having it wash ashore.
