Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Beats Trade Tech in Overtime

Dareck Crane scored 27 points, 9 in overtime, to lead Orange Coast College to a 73-65 victory over Trade Tech Tuesday in the consolation semifinals of the Valley College tournament.
Derek Johnson hit a 3-point field goal with 15 seconds left in regulation to give the Pirates a 59-58 lead. However, Trade Tech’s Chris Johnson made a free throw with 5 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Crane, who made 11 of 18 field goal attempts, sank 3 consecutive shots to give the Pirates (11-3) a 65-60 lead with 2 minutes 39 seconds left in overtime.
Trade Tech led, 20-11, midway through the first half, but the Pirates rallied to take a 29-26 lead at halftime. Neither team led by more than 3 points in the second half.
The Pirates will play San Diego City in the consolation championship game today.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Saddleback 74, Southwestern 53--The Gauchos held a 43-21 rebounding advantage and held Southwestern to 2 offensive rebounds to win at home.
The victory ended a 3-game losing streak for Saddleback (5-7) and extended Southwestern’s losing streak to 3. Southwestern is 5-9. Vincent Mason led the Gauchos with 21 points, Sean Keyes added 18 and Win Versher 10. Antone Curtis scored 9 points and led the Gauchos with 9 rebounds.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Fullerton 66, Long Beach City 52--Debbie Wagner and Heidi Shikuma each scored 17 points at Fullerton as the Hornets, the top-ranked team in the state, improved their record to 13-1. Fullerton had a 37-25 lead at the half and opened the second half with a 15-2 run to put the game away. Karen Proctor, with 15 points, led Long Beach (8-5).
