A 17-year-old boy who led Escondido police on a high-speed car chase and then tried to escape on foot Monday night was shot and killed in a struggle with an officer, Capt. John Fitzgerald said.

Police said that just before midnight the youth, chased by Officer Martin Hewlett, raced north on Broadway for about 1 1/2 miles, then abandoned the stolen car on Paseo del Norte and fled 100 yards to a bushy area. Hewlett chased and tackled the suspect, who struggled with the officer in an attempt to take his weapon, Fitzgerald said.

Hewlett fired 15 rounds with his automatic pistol, killing the boy, whose identity had not been released Tuesday night. The car had been stolen in San Diego.

Authorities said the youth had been paroled from the California Youth Authority in October after serving time for auto theft.
