Quarterback Troy Aikman’s outstanding performance in the Cotton Bowl virtually assured that he will be playing for the Cowboys next season.

Gil Brandt, Dallas’ chief scout, was beaming after Aikman led the Bruins to a 17-3 victory over Arkansas Monday.

The surest prediction now is that the Cowboys will make Aikman the first pick in the NFL draft this spring.

“The Cowboys have lost some luster, and he (Aikman) will help us retain it,” Brandt said. “He’ll provide a little excitement to Dallas and Texas. I want him for my No. 1 pick and I think Coach Tom Landry will be easily convinced.”
