Bay Area Rapid Transit officials evicted the homeless from bicycle lockers at its downtown Oakland headquarters. Workers dragged sleeping bags, cooking gear, tennis shoes and magazines from lockers, which the homeless have rented to store their possessions. They sleep in nearby parks. BART had ordered the renters to clear out by Dec. 31 so the 24 lockers could be moved a block away to the Lake Merritt Station. When the lockers reopen on Monday, the homeless will find it harder to rent them. New rent agreements allow BART to inspect the lockers to ensure they are solely used for bikes, mopeds and wheelchairs.
