Rodriguez Reinstated, Leads Fullerton Gymnasts
Cal State Fullerton gymnast Eli Rodriguez was ruled eligible Friday, just before the Titans’ season opener against San Jose State.
With Rodriguez, the Titans pulled off a come-from-behind, 261-258.20 victory at Titan Gym.
Rodriguez was suspended after his involvement in the stabbing of a former teammate in September. He was allowed to return to practice in November but whether he would be allowed to compete was unknown until Friday.
The Titans trailed entering the final event, the high bar. Rodriguez (9.60), Diego Lopez (8.80) and Sven Lode (8.75) swept the event to give Fullerton the victory.
Rodriguez also finished first in the rings (9.40) and won the all-round competition (55.55).
In the women’s competition, Fullerton’s Stacey Harris won 2 of 4 events to lead the Titans to a 186.20-180.20 victory over Stanford.
