Scott Ostler asserts (Jan. 19): “You can’t deny an obviously talented athlete the right to pursue his professional goals simply because he lacks skills in a totally unrelated area--academics.”

That attitude qualifies Ostler to be the athletic director of any Southwest Conference university not yet on probation. A college education is a privilege for the academically qualified, not a “right” for those who pursue professional (a k a athletic) goals.
