Big West Roundup : New Mexico State Upsets UC Santa Barbara, 74-68

New Mexico State raced to a big first-half lead against UC Santa Barbara and held on to upset the Gauchos, 74-68, Saturday night at Las Cruces, N.M., for its fourth straight Big West Conference victory.

The win raised the Aggies’ record to 13-6 and 6-3 in the Big West.

The Gauchos, who had won 4 straight, fell to 15-2 and 6-2.

Johnny Roberson, who led the Aggies with 23 points and 11 rebounds, scored 13 points in the first half as the Aggies shot 59% from the floor while holding the Gauchos to just 32% shooting. New Mexico State led, 38-20, at halftime.

The Aggies continued to dominate throughout most of the second half, leading, 71-51, late in the game.

But the Gauchos, who shot 2 for 10 from the 3-point line, finished the game with a 17-3 run in the final 2 minutes.

James Anderson added 14 for New Mexico State, the only other Aggie in double figures.

Mike Doyle paced the Gauchos with 16 points, followed by Lucius Davis with 12, Carlton Davenport with 11 and Carrick DeHart with 10.

Utah State 68, San Jose State 54--Darrel White scored 18 points and had 7 rebounds to lead the Aggies past the Spartans at Logan, Utah.

With the victory, Utah State improved to 7-12 and 5-5.

San Jose State dropped to 5-13 and 1-8.

The Aggies outscored San Jose State, 40-20, in the second half

as Kendall Youngblood scored 13 of his 16 points in the half. Utah State used a 21-4 run to take the lead at 57-42 with 8 minutes remaining.

Johnny Johnson led all Spartan scorers with 16 points. Dwain Daniels, Jan Svoboda and Craig McPherson each added 11.

Reid Newey had 17 points for the Aggies, including 4 3-pointers.
