Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and wounded two pit bulls Tuesday as they threatened to attack a 10-year-old Carson girl who was trying to rescue a stray dog the pit bulls were attacking, authorities said.

Deputies Daniel Finn and Robert Claus arrived at the child’s home in the 21500 block of Moneta Avenue to find three pit bulls growling, baring their teeth and advancing on the little girl, deputies said.

The deputies fired a total of six shots, wounding two of the pit bulls, investigators said. The third pit bull escaped, as did the stray dog. The child was not injured, but was “crying and huddling” near a gate to the yard, deputies said.
