Navratilova, Evert Advance in Pan Pacific Second Round
Martina Navratilova won easily, and Chris Evert struggled through full sets as the two Americans advanced today to the quarterfinals of the Pan Pacific Open Tennis Tournament.
The top-seeded Navratilova blasted strong serves in the second set and trounced Japan’s up-and-coming Nana Miyagi 6-4, 6-1 in 47 minutes in a second-round match.
The second-seeded Evert, No. 3 in the world, needed an hour and 40 minutes to post a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over American qualifier Andrea Leand.
In other second-round matches, American Zina Garrison made an erratic start but recovered and beat compatriot Wendy White 6-3, 6-2.
