County health officials closed a 200-foot stretch of coastline near La Jolla Cove on Thursday after 4,500 gallons of sewage spilled into the ocean at the foot of Jenner Street.
Mike Handman, a spokesman for the county’s Environmental Health Services Department, said sewage began spilling from a storm drain at 981 Coast Blvd. at a rate of 25 gallons per minute beginning at 3:54 p.m. The spill was stopped at 6:48, he said.
The cause of the spill was unknown Thursday. Handman said tidal action likely would clear the water of any contamination within 48 hours.
