NHL Roundup : Oilers Rally to Defeat Red Wings, 8-5

Craig MacTavish scored one goal and assisted on three more and Jimmy Carson had two goals Friday night as the Edmonton Oilers rallied to beat the Detroit Red Wings, 8-5, at Edmonton.

The Oilers, who were trailing, 5-3, early in the second period, came back after Grant Fuhr replaced starting goaltender Bill Ranford. MacTavish, Normand Lacombe and Craig Redmond then scored as Edmonton took a 6-5 lead into the third period.

Mark Messier scored early in the final period, and Carson scored a power-play goal with less than 4 minutes left.

Washington 1, Hartford 0--Goalie Pete Peeters made 31 saves and earned his fourth shutout of the season as he stopped the Whalers at Landover, Md.

Bengt Gustafsson’s second-period goal was his 15th of the season as the Capitals extended their unbeaten streak to six games.

Pittsburgh 3, St. Louis 3--Paul Coffey, Mario Lemieux and Troy Loney scored in a 3:28 span of the third period to give the Penguins the tie with the Blues at Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh came back from 3-0, helped by a major penalty against Tony McKegney. McKegney was given 5 minutes for boarding Jim Johnson at 19:36 of the second period, and Pittsburgh scored twice.

Coffey scored his 21st goal at 2:07, and Lemieux scored his 55th on a breakaway at 4:21. Then, with the teams at even strength, Loney tied the score with his seventh goal.

Boston 4, Winnipeg 2--Cam Neely broke a 2-2 tie with 5:44 to play and added an empty-net goal with 56 seconds left as the Bruins beat the Jets at Winnipeg.

Neely, voted as starting right wing on the Wales Conference All-Stars, has 25 goals, including 15 in his last 16 games.
