Mark Gubicza signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals for a reported 1,375,000, averting arbitration and becoming the team’s highest-paid pitcher.
Gubicza, a right-hander, was 20-8 with a 2.70 earned-run average last season and earned $630,000. His new contract surpasses Bert Saberhagen’s $1.3 million.
He filed a $1,425,000 figure for arbitration, and the Royals offered $1,275,000.
