Schrader Makes Successful Transition by Winning Open-Wheeled 50-Miler
Ken Schrader of Concord, N.C., a NASCAR Winston Cup driver, entered the open-wheeled racing ranks Sunday and won the featured 50-miler for United States Auto Club Silver Crown machines at the 12th annual Skoal Bandit Copper World Classic.
Schrader took the lead from pole winner Bob Cicconi of Prospect Park, Pa., on the fifth of 50 circuits around the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway oval and won at an average speed of 126.536 m.p.h.
Indianapolis 500 veteran Rich Vogler took the 25-lap midget feature, Davey Hamilton of Boise, Id., won the 21-lap supermodified feature and Ted Musgrave of Grand Marsh, Wis., won the 40-lap stock-car event.
In the Silver Crown ranks, Schrader held off Vogler throughout the race. Steve Chassey of Carmel, Ind., won a fierce three-way duel for third over Bob Frey of Wickenburg, Ariz. and Cicconi.
Schrader’s victory was his third in five outings in the machine fielded by Louis Seymour.
It was the fourth Copper World triumph for Schrader, who won the midget features here in 1981, 1982 and 1984.
