A missing Santa Ana police dog was found early Tuesday about two miles from its handler’s home, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol Officer Janice Campbell found Vasko, a 5-year-old German shepherd, about 7 a.m. along the northbound Garden Grove Freeway at the Valley View Street off-ramp. The dog was unharmed.
Vasko escaped early Monday when strong winds blew open a wooden gate at the Westminster home of his handler, Officer Mike Fleet.
“He’s just ecstatic, to say the least,” Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said of Fleet’s reaction.
Fleet’s family dog, a 6-month-old female malamute pup named Nakita, ran away with Vasko and has not been found.
