College Basketball : Santa Monica Fast Break Burns Short-Handed Glendale in 76-32 Rout

Share

Glendale College was forced to make full-scale modifications after its leading scorer, Dollie Lucero, was sidelined because of a knee injury last week.

But it is unlikely that even Lucero, who averages 22 points a game, would have made a difference Wednesday against Santa Monica. Glendale was continually burned by Santa Monica’s fast break and absorbed a 76-32 rout in a Western State Conference women’s basketball game at Glendale.

“Without Dollie, I just don’t have any leaders out there,” Glendale Coach Rob Hooper said. “We just couldn’t match up.”

The Corsairs (19-6, 8-2 in conference play) opened an 18-5 lead early into the first half. Then Glendale (7-14, 2-7) was able to exchange baskets until midway through the half when Jackie Niksad buried two three-point baskets to expand Santa Monica’s lead to 30-11.

Maile Feig led Glendale with 13 points. She was the only Vaquero to score in double figures.

Crystal Nettles led Santa Monica with 19. LaVerne Moore added 18, Renee Dabney 15 and Katarina Nordin 10.

Moorpark 59, Cuesta 45--Kristie Sterbens scored 19 points, including five three-point baskets, to lead Moorpark in a Western State Conference game at Cuesta.

Sterbens also had five assists and five steals for Moorpark (19-7, 7-3). Kerrie Marshall added 18 points, including 14 in the first half.

Vanessa Hornbuckle, formerly of Newbury Park High, led Cuesta (10-11, 4-6) with 20 points.
