Prep Basketball Roundup : Mt. Carmel Loses Lead, Game to Orange Glen in Overtime

Mt. Carmel High School led by 13 points heading into the fourth quarter Wednesday but lost to Orange Glen, 61-56, in overtime at Mt. Carmel.

Mt. Carmel (14-8 overall, 6-4 in the Palomar League) was tied with Poway for second place going into the game, and Orange Glen (6-15, 2-7) was in last place.

The Sundevils led, 41-28, at the end of three quarters but were outscored by Orange Glen, 25-12, in the fourth quarter and 8-3 in overtime.

Leading the way was Jeff Leander, who scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, and Chris Ybarra, who scored six of his eight points in overtime.

Mt. Carmel’s Jason Mann made a free throw with 5 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score, 53-53. Mann missed the second free throw. Orange Glen rebounded, but missed a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Orange Glen’s Shawn Macklin led all scorers with 20 points. Mike Graves led Mt. Carmel with 13 points.

In other Palomar League games:

Torrey Pines 104, Vista 47--Torrey Pines (24-1, 9-0) scored the first 11 points of the game and the first 13 points of the second half. Vista didn’t score until 3:16 remained in the first quarter. Courtie Miller led Torrey Pines with 26 points and Kevin Flanagan added 19.

Poway 60, San Dieguito 31--Fourth-ranked Poway outscored visiting San Dieguito, 20-5, in the first quarter. Jay Blankenbeckler had 15 points and Greg Sorrell added 11 for Poway (18-3, 7-3). Brian Malewicz scored 10 to lead San Dieguito (7-14, 1-8).

Avocado League

El Camino 67, Rancho Buena Vista 64--Shuan Scurry made two free throws with 9 seconds remaining for sixth-ranked El Camino (17-5, 10-1) at Rancho Buena Vista. El Camino, which led most of the game, was paced by 20 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks from Dee Boyer. Todd Swanson added 13 assists and eight points for El Camino. Todd Fellars scored a game-high 25 for Rancho Buena Vista (9-13, 5-6).

San Pasqual 58, Carlsbad 52--Andy Loveland scored 17 and Erik Meek added 11 to lead San Pasqual at Carlsbad. San Pasqual (10-9, 7-4) outscored Carlsbad, 17-5, in the third quarter. Jeremy Trierweiler led all scorers with 21 points for Carlsbad (8-12, 2-9).

Oceanside 56, Ramona 51--After scoring six points in both the first and third quarters, Oceanside trailed, 37-33, heading into the final eight minutes. Then Jerry Garrett made all six of his free throws and scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead Oceanside (11-8, 9-2). Nate Hollingsworth scored 15 points, and Tony Newman and Chad Waite added 14 for Ramona (8-13, 5-6).

Escondido 82, San Marcos 36--Escondido (11-9, 6-5) led, 32-25, at the half but allowed San Marcos (5-16, 1-10) just 11 points in the second half at Escondido.

Escondido’s Brooks Barnhard led the way with 26 points and 20 rebounds. Chris Heintschel added 13 points. Jay Kitti and Travis Sweitzer each scored 15 for San Marcos.

Metro Conference

Mar Vista 65, Castle Park 53--Tim O’Neal scored 19 points and Jim Gruber added 14 to lead Mar Vista (5-16, 4-7) at home. Lamont Bowens had a game-high 20 points for Castle Park (7-14, 6-6).

Hilltop 48, Coronado 43--Hilltop (8-15, 4-7) won despite no scorers in double figures. Chad Boyd, Josh Wenning and Donal Hardin each scored nine points. Coronado (8-13, 6-6) was led by Dan MacNeil.

Chula Vista 55, Bonita Vista 44--Chula Vista (12-13, 9-3) outscored Bonita Vista, 14-8, in the second quarter at home. Chula Vista’s Matt Gibbs scored 16 points and Allen McNanee 12. Ritchie Greaser scored 12 points and Cory Duncan 11 for Bonita Vista (5-15, 4-8).
