Mark Ryan’s two free throws with 5 seconds to play gave Point Loma Nazarene an 88-87 upset of Biola, the nation’s 10th-ranked NAIA men’s basketball team, Thursday night at Point Loma Nazarene.

Biola’s Kevin Hood had made one of two free throws with 12 seconds to play to give Biola an 87-86 lead.

Ryan, a 6-foot-4 senior from Chula Vista High School and the team’s tallest player, scored 38 points, had a team-high seven rebounds and made 10 of 10 free throws for PLNC (6-17).

Hood, a 6-9 center, scored 24 for Biola (22-6) but was plagued with foul trouble.

“We have a pretty offensive team,” PLNC Coach Ted Anderson said. “But we really don’t play defense some nights. Tonight we had a good defensive effort.”

Ron Hubbard had 17 points for Point Loma, and Brian Thurston added 14.

VOLLEYBALL

Angel Leath, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Morse High School, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Northern Arizona University on volleyball scholarship.

“I liked the people there and the faculty is behind the program a lot and the girls are great,” said Leath, 17.

Northern Arizona, in Flagstaff, plays in the Big Sky Conference. Leath, who also visited San Diego State, admitted the quality of play isn’t as high as it is in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. or the Big West Conference.

“It’s a couple steps behind,” she said. “But you can’t always go for the volleyball. You have to get an education.”

Leath is the fourth player from the San Diego Volleyball Club’s Elite-17 team to sign an NCAA Division I scholarship. Lynn Patrick (Serra High) signed with California, Alicia Turner (University of San Diego High) with Notre Dame and Blair Noonan (San Pasqual) with Pepperdine.

Brooke Meadows added 13 points and nine rebounds for 19th-ranked SDSU (18-3, 9-3).

Laurel Hudgenes had 26 points for The Master’s (7-15).

SOFTBALL

The San Diego State Coca Cola Softball tournament, scheduled to run today through Sunday, has been cancelled due to wet fields and poor weather conditions for traveling teams. The tournament will not be rescheduled.

Mesa del Sol Fields in Kearny Mesa, an all-dirt facility, was too wet to use, according to Linda Keck, San Diego State assistant sports information director.
