Big West Roundup : Harvey Helps Long Beach Win

Rudy Harvey stepped into the Cal State Long Beach starting lineup Thursday night and scored 16 points to lead the 49ers to a 60-49 victory over University of the Pacific at Long Beach.

Harvey, a 6-5 forward, replaced Rolf Jacobs, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The new 49er lineup has only one player, 6-9 center John Hatten, taller than 6-5.

The 49ers forced 17 Pacific turnovers as they improved their record to 10-11 overall and 7-5 in the Big West Conference.

The 49ers took control of the game midway through the first half when they outscored Pacific, 12-0, to take a 27-12 lead.

Five points in that run were scored by reserve center Marco Fleming, who was a surprise participant after missing the last four games with a leg injury.

Pacific (5-15, 1-10) put up a struggle in the second half before going down to its 20th straight conference road defeat. Twice the Tigers got within 6 points, the last time at 46-40 with 7:55 left.

Hatten and Jeff Eastin scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Long Beach. Chris Fox led Pacific with 11.

New Mexico State 63, Fresno State 57--The Bulldogs stayed with the Aggies until the final two minutes, but New Mexico State made seven of eight free throws in the final 1 1/2 to win at Las Cruces, N.M.

The Aggies are 15-7 and 8-4, and with the win remain in second place in the Big West. The Bulldogs dropped to 11-9 and 6-5.
