Langston Signs With Mariners for $1.3 Million

Pitchers Mark Langston, Scott Garrelts and Roger McDowell, and third baseman Howard Johnson avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to one-year contracts Thursday. Third baseman Tim Wallach agreed to a two-year contract extension with Montreal.

Langston settled for $1.3 million with the Seattle Mariners, a raise of $437,500, with an additional $100,000 in bonuses based on innings pitched. Garrelts agreed to $705,000 with the San Francisco Giants, a raise of $80,000.

Johnson and McDowell settled with the New York Mets--Johnson at $772,500, a raise of $77,500, and McDowell at $762,000, up $147,000.

There are 23 players remaining in arbitration.

The Expos, who hold an option on Wallach’s contract for a third year, did not announce the financial terms of the agreement, but it is believed Wallach will earn about $5 million if the package runs for three years.
