Denver Broncos veteran cornerback Steve Wilson, one of 20 players the Broncos named as unconditional free agents last week, has been hired as head coach at his alma mater, Howard University.

Wilson will replace Willie Jeffries, who resigned after five seasons at Howard to accept a similar job at South Carolina State. Wilson, 31, takes over an NCAA Division I-AA program that was 7-4 last season and 9-1 the year before that.

A 1978 graduate of Howard, he signed a three-year contract with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference school. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Wilson said Thursday that leaving pro football to begin a coaching career was part of his long-range career plan.
