NATION : Fire Damages McFarlane Home
Fire investigators today said an improperly installed fireplace caused a fire which did an estimated $75,000 damage to the home of former National Security Adviser Robert C. McFarlane.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the townhouse of McFarlane and his wife, Jonda, in the Georgetown section of the city. No one was injured in the blaze, which took 30 minutes to bring under control. McFarlane, who was White House national security adviser under former President Ronald Reagan, pleaded guilty last year to four misdemeanor counts of withholding information from Congress in connection with the Iran-Contra affair.
