Anjie Bryant and Ann Van Dortrecht each tossed three-hit shutouts as Cal State Fullerton swept Cal State Northridge, 4-0 and 1-0, in a nonconference softball doubleheader Sunday at Matador Field.

CSUN (1-3) has scored only one run in four games against Division I opponents this season. Northridge had six singles and hit only two balls out of the infield in the first game against Fullerton (2-0).

In the opener, Bryant, a sophomore left-hander, struck out two in a complete-game effort. The Titans scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the fourth. Fullerton loaded the bases in the first on two walks and a hit batter off CSUN’s Heather Lindstrom.

Debra Ann Hartwig’s single and an error by left fielder Pam Smith quickly cleared the bases, however, giving Fullerton all the runs it would need.

Fullerton wound up with four runs, two unearned, and five hits in four innings against Lindstrom. Freshman Christy Alves finished on the mound for Northridge.

CSUN Coach Gary Torgeson said he was disappointed in his team’s lackadaisical play in the wind-plagued first game.

“I thought we played like a bunch of wimps out there,” Torgeson said. “We looked scared out there and we were letting the elements get to us.”

The Lady Matadors were more competitive in the second game. After Torgeson’s between-games tongue-lashing, Fullerton scored just once, on Missy Coombes’ first-inning single.

Debbie Dickmann walked Carey Hess to open the game. Hess was advanced to second on Deanna Sanchez’s sacrifice, then scored on Coombes’ single up the middle.

Van Dortrecht struck out nine and walked one batter in beating Dickmann, who struck out eight and gave up five singles in dropping to 1-2.
