IN BRIEF : Agassi Routs Pugh at Indoor Event

Top-seeded Andre Agassi routed unseeded Jim Pugh 6-2, 6-3 as he opened defense of his title at the Volvo Indoor Tennis Championships.

In other matches, Amos Mansdorf of Israel defeated Glenn Michibata of Canada, sixth-seeded Brad Gilbert defeated Scott Davis, 11th-seeded Michael Chang of Placentia beat Tom Nijssen of Holland, seventh-seeded Kevin Curren stopped Richard Matuszewski, 15th-seeded Derrick Rostagno lost in the second round to Pieter Aldrich of South Africa, Broderick Dyke of Australia defeated 14th-seeded Paul Annacone, and No. 16 Johan Kriek defeated Bill Scanlon.

And at the Virginia Slims tournament in Fairfax, Va., today, Steffi Graf dominated Carling Bassett-Seguso, yielding only 16 points in a 6-0, 6-0 victory that put her into the quarterfinals.

Graf, the world’s top-ranked player, faced only three break points--all in the same game--in the 42-minute victory. With the exception of the fourth game of the second set, she surrendered only two points on her serve in her first-ever meeting with Canada’s former No. 1 player.
