University of Montana quarterback Scott Waak has accepted medical advice not to continue playing football because of severe head and neck injuries he received last season, school officials said today.

Waak was knocked unconscious in the Montana game against South Dakota State, the second game of the season. The university medical staff has advised the Bend, Ore., junior not to play football again because of the injuries. One of Waak’s outstanding performances was a 1987 upset victory over highly regarded University of Nevada-Reno. Waak completed 20 of 28 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns. He was named Big Sky Conference player of the week for the performance.
