The Cincinnati Reds, avoiding arbitration, signed outfielder Eric Davis and left-hander Tom Browning, but Pete Incaviglia lost his arbitration case against the Texas Rangers. Incaviglia will make $475,000, a raise of $200,000. He had asked for $828,000.
The Reds got Davis to agree to a a one-year contract for $1.35 million, with the possibility of his earning $230,000 in bonuses, by sending owner Marge Schott to negotiate with him.
Davis, who made $899,000 in salary last year and $20,000 in bonuses, wanted $1.65 million in arbitration. The Reds offered $1.15 million. Negotiations became bitter and Davis asked to be traded.
Browning, who last season pitched the only perfect game in Reds’ history, agreed to a $1.025-million contract. He asked for $1.125 million in arbitration, and the Reds offered $810,000.
