Girls’ Roundup : Huntington Beach Upsets Tustin in 4-A

Tara Snyder scored in the first half to lead Huntington Beach High School to a 1-0 upset of Tustin in a Southern Section 4-A girls’ soccer match Thursday at Tustin.

Gina Corbin had six saves for Huntington Beach (9-10-4), the third-place team from the Sunset League. The Oilers, who have never before advanced past the first round, will play Simi Valley in the second round Tuesday. Lisa Templeton had six saves for Tustin (11-5-3), the Sea View League champions.

In other 4-A first-round matches:

Edison 2, Torrance 1--Alysson Gibbs scored with about 7 minutes left to break a 1-1 tie for host Edison (9-8-5). Torrance led, 1-0, at the half but Amy Lund tied it for Edison early in the second half. Nikki Turner had seven saves for Edison. Torrance ends the season (14-5-2).

Capistrano Valley 4, El Dorado 0--Susan Staab, Ginger Frank, Becky Linhart and Sarah Stoney scored for the second-seeded Cougars (18-4-2) at home.

Chaffey 3, University 1--Host Chaffey (18-5-2) scored three first-half goals and advances to played top-seeded Esperanza Tuesday in the second round.

Palos Verdes 1, Marina 0 (OT)--Palos Verdes scored in the second overtime to upset Marina, the Sunset League champions. Palos Verdes, an at-large team from the Bay League, is 12-10-1. Marina finishes 12-7-4.

Corona del Mar 2, Los Alamitos 1 (OT)--Julie Smith scored the winning goal on a header off a corner kick by Katy Gie at the 6-minute mark of overtime. Corona del Mar goalie Kim Kolstad made a diving save with about 30 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime. Tracy Schriber scored the first goal for Corona del Mar (16-5-4), and Laura Brun converted a penalty kick with 7 minutes remaining in regulation for Los Alamitos (15-7-2) to tie the score.

Dana Hills 3, West Torrance 0--The Dolphins (16-5-5) got goals from Stacy Juhl, Heidi Phillips and Jenny Koenig. Dana Hills goalie Karla Gunderson had four saves, and Brigit Tapp had 12 saves for West Torrance (15-5-5).

In a 2-A first-round match:

Valencia 2, Ganesha 0--Kristina Yoseloff scored a goal in each half for host Valencia (17-6), the Orange League champions. Ganesha finishes the season 13-6-3.
