USC Women Win on Shot at Buzzer, 70-68

Junior forward Tammy Hammond’s layup at the buzzer gave the USC women’s basketball team a 70-68 victory over Arizona State Friday night in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Tempe, Ariz.

After leading, 31-25, at halftime, the Trojans fell behind by 13 points early in the second half, as the Sun Devils shot 50%. USC rallied behind the play of seniors Karon Howell, who finished with 24 points, and Cherie Nelson, who had 23 points, to take a 65-64 lead with 2:04 remaining.

Arizona State answered with a basket by Carolyn DeHoff to take a 66-65 lead, before Nelson scored to give the Trojans a 67-66 lead. After a free throw by Trojan freshman Linda Kennedy, the Sun Devils tied the game on a jump shot by Rosalind Senior, setting up Hammond’s winner.

USC is 5-6 in the Pac-10 and 9-12 overall. Arizona State is 2-10 and 8-14.
