The Colleges : Roundup : Titans Rally but Fall Short to Arizona, 7-6

Cal State Fullerton scored a run in the eighth and one in the ninth but it was not enough and Arizona won, 7-6, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Titan Field.

After Dave Stanton grounded out to score Rex Peters for Fullerton in the ninth, Rod Klopfer was walked intentionally. Fullerton had runners on first and third with two outs, but Trevor Neighbors grounded out to end the game. Scott Erikson (5-0) went the distance for Arizona (13-2).

Klopfer hit a two-run home run for Fullerton (4-3) in the third inning to put the Titans ahead, 4-3. Arizona tied it with a run in the fifth and took the lead with two runs in the sixth.

In another nonconference baseball game:

San Diego State 2, UC Irvine 1--UC Irvine had the tying on second with two outs in the ninth but Stacy Parker, who had three hits, grounded out to end the game.

Ed Luna singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by John Berger in the fifth inning as Irvine took a 1-0 lead.

San Diego State came back in the sixth on a two-run bad-hop single by Billy Miller. Ken Whitworth worked eight innings for Irvine (2-6-1). John Marshall allowed 11 hits and had five strikeouts for San Diego State (7-2).

In the Arizona Wildcat softball tournament:

Fullerton 9, Nebraska 0--Carey Hess had three hits and an RBI to lead Fullerton (6-1). Debbie Hartwig had two hits and Ann Van Dortrecht had two hits and an RBI for Fullerton. Van Dortrecht pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts. Fullerton lost to Toledo, 6-3, and defeated Arizona, 3-1, earlier Friday.

In the National Christian College Athletic Assn. Division II playoffs’ Western Regional:

Pacific Christian College 103, Southwestern 64--Brian Keiser scored 47 points to lead Pacific Christian in the semifinals at Valencia High School. Keiser made 15 of 18 shots, including 11 of 13 three-pointers.
