Times Named California’s Best Paper for Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, The Times has won top honors from the California Newspaper Publishers Assn. for general excellence among papers with a daily circulation above 75,000, it was announced Saturday.

It was the third time The Times has won the general excellence award in the last four years.

The Times also won the CNPA’s first prize for an editorial series, regardless of circulation. In addition, the paper finished first among large papers in awards given for editorial cartooning, sports coverage, business and financial coverage and arts and entertainment coverage.

Among other large papers in California, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and the San Jose Mercury News each took five top awards, the Orange County Register took three, the Sacramento Union won two and the Bakersfield Californian, the Sacramento Bee, the San Francisco Examiner, the San Diego Union, the San Bernardino County Sun and the Long Beach Press-Telegram each took one.
