Tennis Roundup : Chang Reaches Third Round

Ninth-seeded Michael Chang advanced to the third round of the U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championships Tuesday by defeating Richey Reneberg, 6-1, 7-5, at Philadelphia.

Chang will meet eighth-seeded Dan Goldie, who beat Nicolas Pereira of Venezuela, 6-2, 7-6.

In the only upset of the day, Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia defeated 13th-seeded Derrick Rostagno, 6-4, 6-4. Srejber will next play third-seeded Tim Mayotte, who eliminated Tom Nijssen of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-2.

Andre Agassi and Boris Becker will begin play today.

Fourth-seeded Larisa Savchenko, troubled by her erratic serve, came from behind to defeat Peanut Louie Harper, 7-5, 6-2, in the first round of the $250,000 Virginia Slims of California at Oakland.

Savechenko was down a set point at 5-4 in the first set, before finding her composure and winning nine of the next 11 games.

Earlier in the day it was announced that a $125,000 Virginia Slims event will be held Oct. 9 in Moscow.
