IN BRIEF : McEnroe Advances in Lyon Tourney

LYON, France — John McEnroe, the No. 2 seed, breezed into the quarterfinals of the of the $291,000 Lyon Grand Prix tennis tournament today with an easy 6-3, 6-2, victory over Christian Bergstrom of Sweden. Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, the top seed, rallied to defeat France’s Erik Winogradsky, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In other second-round matches, Anders Jarryd of Sweden, seeded fifth, routed France’s Tarik Benehabiles, 6-1, 6-1, and another Swede, Jonas Svensson, beat West Germany’s Erik Jelen, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). McEnroe, the world’s top-ranked player from 1981-1984, used his big serve to dominate the Swede, firing 11 aces and numerous service winners. “I feel in the last few months, day in and day out, my consistency has improved quite a bit,” McEnroe said.
